Testing Information for Motorcycle Stators

Battery charge: 13.5 – 14.5 volts D.C.

Check Stator (1st test)

·         Unplug 3 stator wires

·         With engine off, check continuity between all 3

o   The readings should be fairly even

·         NO continuity from any 3 stator wires to engine case (Ground)

Check Stator (2nd test)

·         Unplug stator from the harness

·         Start engine

·         Set meter to A.C. volts

·         Check A.C. volts from 1 wire to the other: test all 3 combinations (A to B, B to C, C to A)

o   Volts at idle: approx 15-20

o   Volts at 3000-5000 RPM: approx 50-80

Wires from stator

Stator must pass both tests to be good.

If stator tests good and there is still no charge at battery (13.5-14.5 volts D.C.), suspect bad rectifier/regulator or bad wiring.
